The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) pays for necessary medical services,
but does not cover all medical expenses. Additional private medical insurance (health and dental plans) may
be required. Please check OHIP coverage for children born in Canada, OHIP
health card renewal conditions, OHIP Office Location and other information related
to OHIP. OHIP rules specify that the certain conditions must be met in order to be referred to a specialist.
OHIP does not cover such areas as prescription drugs.
If you are coming to Ontario from another Canadian province you should consult with
the health care plan in your home province prior coming to Toronto and apply for OHIP
(Ontario, Canada Health Insurance Plan). OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three
months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. Please check the time a person
can spend away from Canada without losing OHIP coverage.
OHIP has no coverage if you travel outside of Canada
